In American Literature, we will encounter some of the best writers of America from the 1600’s to the present as we trace the literary, philosophical and historical movements that have reflected and shaped U.S. culture. Students think critically about how depictions of “The American Dream” have evolved and been perpetuated by literature and the media, and use this understanding to create textual and visual responses, which reflect a deep understanding and personal perspective on “The American Dream.” Students disseminate this extensive literary knowledge through writing, discussion, and speech. Throughout the course, students develop as readers, critical thinkers, and writers, in the analysis and design of their own American Dreams. All of the writers presented in this course tell their own story about this country and being a part of it. What does it mean to these writers to be American? What does it mean to you to be American? What is the American Dream and how has it shaped our economic system, our educational policy, and our views of ourselves and others both individually and collectively? Students are expected to do between 30 minutes – 1 hour of homework between class meetings, and are expected to attend class every day. Prerequisites are English 9 and 10. |
